Pensacola Florida has won several awards as a city and top US retirement community. It was selected as a Best Place to Retire and routinely surfaces as an affordable place for active adults 55 + to live in the United States.

Located as the western most city in Florida at then end of the Florida panhandle and only 3 hours from New Orleans, Pensacola has a warm climate with temperate summers and winters that can get to blow freezing only a few nights a year.

It has an extensive waterfront with popular beaches along a National Park. Pensacola and the surround Escambia Count, with a population of almost 290,000, is large, but not so big that it is overwhelming. The city bills itself as "The First Settlement City,” and sometimes simply “Pcola”. The name derives from the Spanish settlement in 1559, when Tristan de Luna established a short-lived settlement at Pensacola Bay; it was the first multi-year European settlement in what is now the continental United States.

In the late 17th century the Spanish returned to the area to found the modern city of Pensacola as an outpost from which to defend their claims to Spanish Florida. The city's strategic but isolated position, combined with continued European rivalries played out in North America, led to it changing hands among different Western powers a number of times. At different times it was held by the Spanish, the French, the British, the United States, and the Confederate States of America. It has claimed the name "The City of Five Flags"

Active adults, in retirement here, will find plenty to do here. There are local attractions, particularly concerning the Gulf of Mexico and waterfront, with its boating, beaches, and fishing and culture. Golf is popular here. There is literally a festival EVERY week. The downtown area has a couple of museums, a street of restaurants and art galleries, historic area, lots of interesting shops, plus marinas along the former commercial waterfront.

A number of older restored houses can be found in the North Hill and East Hill districts. Active adults in retirement will find every kind of housing choice – from dedicated retirement communities to all types of housing in the city’s neighborhoods. From apartments to condos to houses, the area offers very good value and is a reason why Pensacola has become a fast growing community. Home prices are very stable and the military presence assures a constant turn over.

Pensacola is the county seat of Escambia County and has over 25,000 college students making the city youth (and active adult) oriented.

All homes on Pensacola Beach are within 2 blocks of the Gulf or Bay, many have deep water access and the island of Santa Rosa has most of the services those in retirement want nearby.

Climate and Physical Environment

Pensacola is located on a bay in what is usually called the Florida Panhandle and is just south of and culturally part of Alabama. It is somewhat protected from major storms by a 30 mile long barrier island, Santa Rosa Island, upon which is Pensacola Beach, a city itself with hotels, condos, beach homes, a small boardwalk, restaurants, bars, and all things "Beach". Pensacola has a warm semi arid climate, reaching average highs in summer months in the mid 90's. The average low in January is 40 degrees.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Some of the most visited attractions include the Naval Air Museum, the beach, the Pensacola Lighthouse, and the historic downtown area. In Pensacola's downtown historic museum district are the Pensacola museum of art, the T T Wentworth Museum, the Pensacola Saenger, The Rex Theater, the Pensacola Opera, and the Pensacola Little Theater. There are several colleges and universities in Pensacola, including Pensacola State College, West Florida University

Crime

The crime rate in Pensacola is slightly above the US average.

Medical facilities

As is befitting a progressive city there are many large hospitals here, including the Sacred Heart and Baptist Medical Centers.

Transportation

The Pensacola International Airport is inside the city proper and less than 20 minutes from almost any part of Pensacola. It's a delight to leave for the airport less than an hour from departure .....
